Coronation Street star Shayne Ward's fiancée Sophie Austin has said she is 'forever in awe of him' after he was praised by fans for an emotional suicide storyline. Shayne's last scenes as Aidan Connor aired on Monday night, as part of a harrowing storyline which will see the character take his own life off-screen. Following the episode's broadcast, ex-Hollyoaks star Sophie, 34, took to Instagram to praise her husband-to-be for taking on the emotional plot, sharing a snap of Shayne, 33, walking down the Corrie cobbles with their one-year-old daughter Willow. Sophie captioned the touching snap: 'So here we are at the end of this long journey, one that I'm so so proud of you for taking. 'At first it was such a hard decision and road to face knowing how important this story was for us as a family and for so many others. 'You were scared as you wanted to do it justice ! Well you did my darling , you listened to stories/ experiences, learnt, revisited your own memories and tragic loss and worked hard to make this story the truest it could be and to hopefully help others and get people taking. 'I will forever be in awe of you and your amazing talent as an actor. Thank you my love xx.' Sophie and Shayne announced their engagement in January, and welcomed their first child, daughter Willow-May, in 2016. The actor's heartbreaking final scenes on Coronation Street saw Aidan break down in tears while alone in his flat, as part of the hard-hitting storyline which will see the character take his own life. The plot was confirmed last week by soap bosses to raise awareness of male mental health, working closely with charities Samaritans and CALM. Fans will see the continuation of the story on Wednesday (9th May) in an hour-long special, when Aidan's father Johnny (played by Richard Hawley) discovers his son's dead body. Shayne spoke about the harrowing storyline during an appearance on This Morning, admitting he found the final scenes difficult to watch. He said: 'I got asked before Christmas and I was full of all different emotions. I was instantly scared, nervous and heartbroken as I knew this was more than a just a storyline. 'I knew the impact it was going to have on the public when it aired. I think it's amazing Coronation Street is covering this. I'm still full of all emotions.' Coronation Street continues with a one hour special on Wednesday 9th May at 7:30pm on ITV.
