Emmerdale spoilers: Ross Barton star defends acid attack plot ahead of shock exit

EMMERDALE fans were left stunned when Ross Barton was part of a shocking acid attack storyline that has since seen him struggle to come to terms with the incident but actor Michael Parr has defended the plot.

Earlier this year, Emmerdale’s Ross was mistaken for Joseph Tate (played by Ned Porteous) and acid was thrown in his face.

The mechanic has struggled to cope following the attack, even becoming addicted to prescription pills.

Last night, viewers saw Ross head to Home Farm and threaten to shoot Joseph and his right-hand man Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) if they didn’t reveal what really happened when he was attacked.

However, in a shock turn of events he shot Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb), who is now fighting for her life.

The storyline has received backlash in recent months, with many claiming it is “too dark”.

But, actor Michael has defended the plot, insisting it is necessary as “people need to be informed” on real-life issues.

“I don’t know what these people think a soap’s platform should be,” he told the Daily Star.

“On a soap, we have a bigger reach than most TV dramas, so of course we want to tackle topical issues and raise awareness.

“We’d be mad not to when our viewing figures are what they are.”

The 31-year-old continued: “Reports show that there are two acid attacks in the UK every single day.

“And the results last forever.”

Michael even touched upon storylines in other soaps, including rival Coronation Street.

Noting how important Aidan Connor’s suicide storyline was, he commented: “I read recently that a male suicide charity had a 1,000 per cent increase in calls from people asking for help after that.”

It comes after Michael confirmed that he was leaving Emmerdale.

Taking to Twitter, he told his 139,000 followers: “Yes I’ll be leaving the soap soon.

“Have had the best few years at Emmerdale but it’s time to move on and explore other avenues. If I win that soap award I might stay though.”

Michael went on to add that he was not leaving due to the make-up he had to wear for the acid attack storyline.

“Would just like to state the I’m not leaving Emmerdale because of the make up or because I’m going to become a professional MMA fighter,” he wrote.

“It’s just time for a change....although we all know I could be heavy weight champ if I wanted to be.”
